The NXT Series Violin

The NS NXT Series Violin – available in 4 or 5 string, traditional or fretted versions – opens up a new horizon for the serious musician seeking to play a world-class electric violin on a limited budget. These instruments, crafted in the Czech Republic by the makers of NS Design's renowned CR Series, bring world-class design and craftsmanship to a surprisingly affordable price range and, with a visual appearance as striking as its sound, the roadworthy NXT is an exciting and reliable partner for the most demanding performance career.

Light weight and perfect balance are critical performance factors for any electric violin and the NXT Series tops the charts as one of the lightest electric models on the market. Weighing in at just 585g (610g for the NXT5 Violin), the NXT range pioneers special carving techniques to reduce the weight of the maple body, while preserving extraordinary rigidity and striking good looks. Ultralight tail-mounted tuners allow precise adjustment, easy string changes, and keep the balance point of the instrument close to the shoulder for maximum comfort.

Using set screws, the rock-maple bridge can be readily adjusted to the desired action height - high and powerful, low and fast, or anywhere in between. NS Electric Strings, and all other traditional violin strings fit NS violins, allowing the player to select from many different string options, each with a unique sound and feel.

Polar™ Pickup

Additional weight is saved by advanced Polar™ piezo technology that eliminates the need for heavy on-board batteries and circuitry. The self-powered Polar electromechanical transducer, although technically referred to as a passive pickup, is anything but passive, with a higher output than many active systems. The result is unsurpassed dynamic range, clarity, and sheer power.

The dual mode Polar pickup responds to both lateral string vibration for bowing, and vertical vibration for pizzicato playing (a body-mounted two-way switch lets the player change modes easily). The resulting sound retains the essential timbres of a fine acoustic violin, but is easily modified - via on-board controls or post-processing - to suit any sonic palette.

JackPot™ Potentiometer

The NXT is also the first NS violin to incorporate NS Design's innovative JackPot™ potentiometer in its volume and tone controls. Conventional passive volume and tone controls work by siphoning a portion of the output signal to ground, and continue to hold back a portion of the pickup's signal even when turned up all the way. The JackPot incorporates a rotary switch that disengages the ground when turned fully clockwise, sending 100% of the instrument's signal to the amplifier. The result is a fuller, richer tone, with more power, detail, and overall intensity.

Support Systems

The NXT Violin comes equipped with the NS Custom Shoulder Rest which can be formed by the player to fit the body perfectly. The violin can also attach to NS Design's revolutionary Balanced Shoulder Rest which secures it effortlessly in optimal playing position and to the NS Design Adjustable Chin Rest.

Flight Case Included

All NXT Series Violins are shipped with a fabric covered flight case, featuring a form-fitting, hard foam core that also holds 2 bows, shoulder rest, output cable, and extra gear, with lock and key. Dimensions: 81cm (32") long, 21cm (8.5") wide, 14 cm (5.5") high, approx. 2.7kg (6lb) loaded weight.

The NS Design Passive JackPot™ Potentiometer

U.S. Patent No. 8,253,007

All NXT Series instruments now boast an exciting new performance feature by Ned Steinberger, the NS JackPot potentiometer.

Whether you know it or not, your volume and tone pots are robbing tone from your instrument even when they are turned up full. The JackPot is a combination potentiometer and rotary switch which is able to completely bypass the instruments' volume and tone circuitry, producing a stronger signal level, greater warmth, and more overall intensity.

How the Jackpot works

Conventional controls reduce the volume level by bleeding a portion of the output signal to ground. Rotating the knob counterclockwise increases the portion that is connected to ground, thus reducing the output level until it is fully grounded and the volume is zero. However, when the knob is rotated fully clockwise for maximum volume, there is still a portion of the signal that bleeds to ground, and as a result the output level never reaches the full level the pickup would achieve if it were wired directly to the output jack.

The JackPot’s rotary switch clicks open when the knob reaches the end of its full on (clockwise) rotation. The open switch lifts the ground to the pot, eliminating the load on the pickups and allowing the full signal to reach the output jack. When the knob is rotated counterclockwise, the ground to the pot is reconnected so the pot returns to standard operation. In this mode the sound and function are exactly the same as an ordinary control.

With the JackPot, players can run full on, with the pickups wired directly to the output jack, yet still have a trusty volume knob to back off instantly to a lower level when needed.
