The NXT Series Cello opens up a new horizon for the serious cellist looking to play a great instrument on a limited budget. These instruments, available in 4 & 5 string formats, with fretted or fretless fingerboards and a choice of Black Satin or Sunburst finishes, are crafted in the Czech Republic by the makers of the renowned NS Design CR Series and exemplify flawless workmanship and incredible value.

Adaptable to a nearly limitless range of music styles, The NXT Cello brings unprecedented affordability to the player interested in world-class design, craftsmanship and performance. With a visual appearance a striking as its sound, the roadworthy NXT is an exciting and reliable partner for the most demanding performance career.

NS Polar™ Pickup

Pizzicato and arco techniques have almost unlimited expressive potential, thanks to the NS Polar™ Pickup System. A convenient switch allows selection of the traditional arco mode for percussive attack and dynamic bowed response, or pizzicato mode for a smooth, sustained tone. Passive electronics deliver unlimited overhead for the ultimate sound without cumbersome batteries.

JackPot Potentiometer

The NXT Cello now incorporates NS Design's innovative JackPot™ potentiometer in its volume and tone controls. Conventional passive volume and tone controls work by siphoning a portion of the output signal to ground, and continue to hold back a portion of the pickup's signal even when turned up all the way. The JackPot incorporates a rotary switch that disengages the ground when turned fully clockwise, sending 100% of the instrument's signal to the amplifier. The result is a fuller, richer tone, with more power, detail, and overall intensity.

NXT technology additionally offers some benefits which cellists in particular will greatly appreciate; Wolf tones, a major concern for acoustic cellists, do not occur on the NXT cello. Similarly, in amplified performance settings, the isntrument will not feed back, even at high volume and, unlike an amplified acoustic cello, the NXT Cello sends 100% of its sound through its pickup, allowing loop and effects devices to manipulate the complete tone of the instrument.

Construction

The solid maple body and neck, together with the graduated ebony fingerboard, deliver a rich, full tone that rings true for every note. Asymmetrical fingerboard relief provides extraordinary ease of playability from the lowest to the highest positions. To suit individual player preferences, the fingerboard relief can be adjusted via the truss rod in the neck, and the string height is readily adjustable at the bridge.

Accessories

  • NXT Gig Bag - Nylon 102 cm (40") long; 4.7 kg (10.3 lb) loaded weight with stand. With handle and shoulder strap.

  • NXT Cello Tripod Stand  - Sturdy, stable, tubular steel construction. Fully adjustable for a wide range of playing styles, this cello specific variant is shorter than the equivalent NXT Double Bass stand to better facilitate seated performance.

Optional Extras

  • NS Traditional Cello End Pin Stand - Provides the traditional cello points of contact and position and is the best choice for cellists who have an animated style of playing while seated, or who play the instrument at a more horizontal angle.

  • NS CR End Pin Stand - Offers full freedom of movement. Height, tilt and "right bout" angle are fully adjustable providing a more conventional feel.

  • NS CR Tripod - Provides stable support for both the NS Cello and Double Bass with full height and tilt adjustments allowing the player to select the ideal position, seated or standing, vertical or horizontal. Folds for storage and fits in the NS gig bag.

  • NS CR End Pin Stand Conversion Kit - Attaches the NS CR End Pin Stand to the CR Series Tripod Stand to hold the instrument upright for on-stand performance or when not in use.

  • NS Frame Strap System - Allows the cellist to stand up with full mobility for a new experience of freedom and expression.

  • NS Flight Case - Aluminum edged plywood measuring 136cm x 28cm x 27cm (53.5" x 11" x 10.5") with loaded weight of approximately 18 kg (40 lb) including tripod stand.

The NS Design Passive JackPot™ Potentiometer

U.S. Patent No. 8,253,007

All NXT Series instruments now boast an exciting new performance feature by Ned Steinberger, the NS JackPot potentiometer.

Whether you know it or not, your volume and tone pots are robbing tone from your instrument even when they are turned up full. The JackPot is a combination potentiometer and rotary switch which is able to completely bypass the instruments' volume and tone circuitry, producing a stronger signal level, greater warmth, and more overall intensity.

How the Jackpot works

Conventional controls reduce the volume level by bleeding a portion of the output signal to ground. Rotating the knob counterclockwise increases the portion that is connected to ground, thus reducing the output level until it is fully grounded and the volume is zero. However, when the knob is rotated fully clockwise for maximum volume, there is still a portion of the signal that bleeds to ground, and as a result the output level never reaches the full level the pickup would achieve if it were wired directly to the output jack.

The JackPot’s rotary switch clicks open when the knob reaches the end of its full on (clockwise) rotation. The open switch lifts the ground to the pot, eliminating the load on the pickups and allowing the full signal to reach the output jack. When the knob is rotated counterclockwise, the ground to the pot is reconnected so the pot returns to standard operation. In this mode the sound and function are exactly the same as an ordinary control.

With the JackPot, players can run full on, with the pickups wired directly to the output jack, yet still have a trusty volume knob to back off instantly to a lower level when needed.

NS NXT 4 Cello - NIce

A nice electric cello, beautifully made and seems to work. Too soon to comment on its sound quality but early indications are very favourable. The Bass Centre were very helpful and the unit all packed and delivered quickly. Thank you.
